Babbage Charles Babbage A Philosopher Charles Babbage English Mathematician [1791-1871] Babbage would classify as a philosopher because of his contribution to mathematics. (As I am a big proponent of mathematics, you can understand why I would support him, a lot). Born in London, Babbage studied Cambridge where he became a professor of mathematics and spent a lot of his life building two calculating machines. His machines attempted to compute logarithmic functions and other functions, but he was never fully successful. The unfinished product is at the Science Museum in London, England. Now, Babbage's work has been adapted and perfected by others, and his work serves as the basis for computations in electronic computers today.
