    A Philosopher

    • George Berkeley

    Empiricist

    Ireland

    [1685-1753]

    Berkeley's major works are:

  • Philosophical Commentaries [1707-08]

  • 127 Essays Towards a New Theory of Vision [1709]

  • Principles of Human Knowledge [1710]

  • Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous [1713]

  • De Motu [1721]

  • Alciphron [1734]

  • The Analyst [1734]

  • A Defense of Free thinking in Mathematics [1744]

Berkeley studied at Trinity College in Dublin at the age of 19 and became a professor there by the age of 22. Between 1707 and 1713, Berkeley did most of his writings.

Most notably, in Vision Berkeley challenged Locke's and Plato's belief that abstract ideas are a necessity of learning and communication. Instead, Berkeley believes that abstract ideas can be explained by his absolute spave, metaphysical realism, and absolute motion and time.
