Churchland Paul Churchland A Philosopher Paul Churchland American Cognitive Scientist [PHD at UCSD in 1969] Churchland's argument against our normal psychological view of reality is very complex and innovative. Thus his argument presents an interesting approach to the subject. Churchland believes that our normal view of psychological phenomena, constructed by propositional attitudes like beliefs and desires, is made up; in essence, beliefs and desires are "folk" theory. To clarify, this entire theory is called "folk psychology" and Churchland argues beliefs and desires cannot serve as the basis for empirical scientific theory. In fact, they do not exist! Instead, of beliefs and desires, Churchland argues that the standard use of beliefs and desires could just as well be replaced with any other category that describes our mental state.
