    A Philosopher

    • Michel Foucault

    French Philosopher and Historian

    1926-1984

Foucault is best known for his exploration into the human mind; specifically, he has looked at the insanity of man during various ages and tried to determine the cause of this madness.

Foucault's major points are as follows:

  • With his essays on history, Foucault tried to show the geneological transitional history of human development and how unrelated events had grave impacts on the development of new thought.

  • His later works focused on eliminating man's need for a prior limits (like reason) and instead developing alternative ways of living.

    His works include:

  • In Mental Illness and Personality [1954]

  • History of Madness in the Classical age [1961]

  • The Birth of the Clinic [1963]

  • The Order of Things [1966]

  • The Archaeology of Knowledge [1969]

  • Discipline and Punish [1975]

  • History of Sexuality [1976]

  • The Confessions of the Flesh ---This was unpublished---

  • The Use of Pleasure [1984]

  • The Care of the Self [1984]
