Heloise
A Philosopher
Heloise
Disciple and Correspondent to Peter Abelard
[ca1101-1164]
Heloise is somewhat of an anomaly as a philosopher because her only writings are found in letters to her mentor Peter Abelard.
Despite this, we do know several things about her, aside from her exquisite rhetoric skills:
She was educated by her uncle, Fulbert, in Paris.
At the age of 18, she became Abelard's student
After Abelard's castration, Heloise did not meet him until they started the Benedictine House of the Paraclete ten years later.
Heloise died in 1164, while leading her convent in Paracleat, Novent France. Fittingly, she was buried next to Abelard at the convent of Paraclete, France.
