    David Hume

    Hume

    A Philosopher

    • David Hume

    Scottish Philosopher/ Historian

    [1711-1776]

    Hume's writings include:

  • A Treatise of Human Nature [1739-40]

  • Political Discourses [1752]

  • The Natural History of Religion [1755]

  • History of England [1754-1762]

Hume is most well known for extreme skepticism he espoused. By taking Locke and Berkely's ideas to their most radical conclusions, Hume believed that the world was nothing but a series of mere sensations. The cause and effect of the natural world resulted from the combination of any two impressions.

In addition, Hume carried his skepticism to religion, where he argued that there was no basis for any rational or natural theology. Futhering Hume's ideas are Kant, who argues there are a priori principles (specifically reason) that man must follow. Kant's addition to Hume's ideas shed more light on the ideas both suggest.
