    Hypatia

    A Philosopher

    • Hypatia

    Alexandrian Thinker and Mathematician

    [370-415]

Hypatia may possibly be the world's first female mathematician.

Her skills as a philosopher and mathemetician were cultivated at a young age by her father Theon. He gave her rigorous instruction in physical and mental disciplines, and from this instruction Hypatia gained the necessary abilities to surpass her father's abilities.

Hypatia studied astronomy, astrology and mathematics. Her most notable contribution to astronomy was her invention of the astrolabe, a device used to study astronomy. (There is some debate on whether this device was invented a century ago). Hypatia's most well-known work is on the idea of conic sections, which was first brought to light by Apollonius. Her concepts developed the forms of hyperbolas, parabolas, and ellipses.

Unfortunately for the world of philosophy and most importantly Hypatia, Hypatia died in 415 AD as a mob attacked her, stripped her and killed her with pieces of broken pottery.
