    A Philosopher

    • Martin Luther King Jr.

    Civil Rights Leader and Philosopher

    [1929-1968]

Martin Luther King Jr.'s contribution to the American Civil's Rights Movement is unparalled and without a doubt he stands as one of the most important philosophers of the twentieth century.

King was responsible for the method of civil disobedience, which was a type of disobedience used to nonviolently fight against laws that one felt do no represent a higher law of humanity. Civil disobedience included sit-ins, walkouts and bus rides to disobey racist laws in Southern US.

Civil disobedience comes from the idea of "agape," which is a love for humanity. From this love of mankind, one derives a set of higher laws, which can be violated by unfair civil laws.

King died in 1968 when he was assassinated by James Earl Ray.
