    Leibniz

    Gottfried Wilhelm, Baron von Leibniz

    A Philosopher

    • Leibniz

    German Philosopher and Mathemetician

Leibniz had a diverse group of interests, such as the physical sciences, law, history, diplomacy and logic. Perhaps his most important contribution to any field was in mathematics, where he invented calculus. (Unfortunately, Newton published his work before him).

In Leibniz's opinion, the universe is made of monads, which are infinite in number, hierarchially arranged and nonmaterial. Most of his major works are based off of this idea and his works include:

  • Theodicy [1710]

  • Monadology [1714]

  • New Essays on Human Understanding [1765]

New Essays on Human Understanding was Leibniz's most well known work. Nowadays, people tend to focus more on Leibniz's contributions to mathematics and logic; only well after leibniz's death was it uncovered that he was the founder of symbolic logic.
