    A Philosopher

    • Elizabeth Palmer Peabody

    American Transcendentalist

    [1804-1894]

Peabody's interest in philosophy began at an early age, but she was heavily influenced by William Ellery Channing in her mid to late twenties.

    Some interesting notes about Peabody

  • Peabody's work was heavily concentrated in platonic-transcendentalism.

  • Peabody and Fuller were the only female charter members of the Transcendalist Club created in 1837.

  • 1840 marked the year that Fuller opened her influential bookstore to support the Transcendental movement.

  • She helped produce some of Hawthorne's works and published her own "Aesthetic Papers."

  • She closed her store in 1850 to devote time to work Channing's philosophy and to support kindergarten for children.
