    A Philosopher

    • Jean Jacques Rousseau

    Swiss-French Philosopher

    [1712-1778]

Rousseau is perhaps the most influential figure of the period of Enlightenment, influencing such people as Kant, Goethe, Robespierre and Tolstoy.

Rousseau is highly regarded for his conception of "natural man." In Discourse on the Inequalities of Men, Rousseau argues that man is originally good, but he is corrupted when property, agriculture, science and commerce enter society. Man's "Amour propre" (love of himself i.e. vanity) helps to progress the cycle where man makes comparisons and eventually becomes corrupted by society.

According to Rousseau, people enter into the Social Contract to correct the problems that come with the introduction of a fully functional society.

The following is a list of some of Rosseau's works:

  • Discourse on the Inequalities of Men [1754]

  • Social Contract [1762]

  • Confessions [1781]
